More Character Design

The boss put me up to the task of making our character.. Here's how it has been going.

These are some older designs, starting to explore body shapes more here.
I then started drawing with my tablet.

Head design 1 - I like this guy, could do with adjustment but I will wait for feedback from ol' director

Head design 2 - not sure if he looks to young, again, adjustments can be made

Body design 1 with head 1

Body design 1 with head 2

Body design 2 with head 1 - I definitely think this design is stronger, the slumped shoulders and crooked neck work well for this character.

The same image with a bit of colour added - this may not be the direction we want to go but it gives you an idea.

Sound Thoughts

In order of how they come up in the animation - here are the sounds that we need to gather, I'm sure I may have missed a few but that should come up in the creation of the animatic.

Beeping alarm clock
A variety of clock noises - analogue ticking, alarm noises, bell toll of a grandfather clock
Shower (rushing water & drain?)
Toaster
Car door, engine starting
Office noises (phones ringing, photocopier, general noise)
Footsteps (carpet?)
Flushing toilet
People talking (just general talking noise though)
Car pulling up (brakes, engine slowing)
Footsteps (gravel?)
Microwave (pushing of buttons, the whurr of machine, beep)
TV
Eating noise? (cutlery against plates)
Bed (cloth noise, creak of springs)
Gentle snore
Atmospheric outside noise (gentle wind)
Train announcement
Sigh

Character Development

Here is what I've got so far on character. Some are quite off from what we want, I'll try to point out what Lucas mentioned in the feedback he gave me today. I can't stop myself from going over everything in pen! Annoying! I did mostly heads, with some body ideas

From what I can decipher from my notes:
likes 13. but change the mouth and eyes shape a bit? top of head?
like 17 but smaller head? (I like the massive head)
likes body of 21 - play around with that?
likes 22. - change eyes a bit? make him look older?
likes body of 24. mess around and change with it though? widen hips a bit
also the final bottom right one next to the watercolour with no number, mess around with a bit, change glasses
27 & 28 good - mess around with and change hat?

Early Research

Been scouring the internet for some time looking for good inspirations for our animation, turns out it's harder to find influences when you're looking too hard!

Key Lime Pie (2007) Directed by Trevor Jimenez

A short film, film noir style. I really like this animation.. might not be completely relevant to ours but, still, characters are kinda simple but effective - the voice is nice and gritty too. Colours are awesome in this.

Stranger That Fiction (2006) Directed by Marc Forster
Had this recommended to me by a friend, the story is similar to ours and the morning routine sequence especially relevant. Also a pretty good film.

Up (2009) directed by Peter Docter & Bob Peterson

Kinda same situation. Our character needs to be younger than him though!

The Triplets of Belleville (2003) directed by Sylvain Chomet

I put this one up particularly for when the train rumbles past the house, shaking the whole building (we were talking about whether or not "man" is going to have trains in his life usually). I also like the crazy character design, his legs are are insane when he's riding the bike.

Mary and Max (2009) directed by Adam Elliot

Which I'm about to watch! But everyone says it's depressing...

Group Work - Initial Thoughts

We've had a chance to talk as a group. We discussed the first (basic) script, also throwing ideas around and contemplating potential roles for everyone.

Lukas' idea is about a middle aged man living his life through excessive routine, obsessed with this routine and performing the same menial tasks at the same time everyday. His home is normal, except for the large amounts of clocks (a variety of clocks!), timetables and calendars. The animation will show this montage of mediocrity, gradually growing faster and faster until it shows an analogue clock at 12 O'clock, moving back it reveals the man is in a train station, in his best suit. The man says "perfect timing" and lays down on the track. The camera then shows the empty train station, focusing on the electronic timetable as the announcement mentions the delays, the timetable changes to "delayed" - the man sighs and the animation ends.

This is a brief version of the script, with a little bit of my own interpretation thrown in there, so it will be interesting to see how the script develops - as we all have our own vision of things to come. I feel that importantly, the pace, momentum and build up is important in our piece. It needs to build up to the moment he's at the train station, where the slow of pace will be very effective. We have also been talking about a suitable style and colour use, it seems that subdued, unsaturated colour is favoured in the group (maybe even black and white) - the inside of his home needs to contrast with the outside! I really like the idea of extreme close up shots of the "mundane" things - cup of tea - toast - arm rest of sofa etc.

I volunteered for sound production, partially because I have some experience in recording sound and also there's a chance to have some fun with the sound effects, they will be important in the build up of the daily activities. The montage part will take a good 3/4 of the animation, and as it needs to build momentum the sound will play a heavy part in the flow of things. The ticking of the clocks will be the most important here. There are two parts of dialogue that need careful consideration - the "perfect timing" of the man, and the train announcements. I will need to find out what effect I will need to use to make it sound like it's coming from an echoey speaker. I have someone in mind for the voice of the announcement, she speaks closely to the "queen's English" and I can imagine it working well. Maybe I need to book an induction to the sound studio?

Also offered myself to do the animatic, with a bit of Flash and After Effects. It seems that a general animatic will be made which I will then add the key movements in afterwards.

But currently we're all doing research which is SUPER important! Also everyone is doing some character design to see what we all come out with. INSPIRATION TO LOOK AT: Belleville rendezvous (sp?), Mary & Max, Stranger than Fiction...

Okay I'm waffling on now. RESEARCH!

My Idea

It's the day after the pitch - I didn't get chosen but I thought I'd still put my idea up on here.

My idea was inspired from a legend in Plato's book "The Republic". The legend is used as more of an example, kind of debate-fuel for further discussion. The title of the legend is "The Ring of Gyges"

Briefly, it is about a shepherd named Gyges who is out herding his flock when he stumbles upon a cave. In the cave he discovers a golden ring, and upon further investigation he realises that it gives him the power to turn invisible. He then makes his way to the city, eventually seducing the Queen and obtaining her help to kill the King, and become King himself.

Upon explanation, Socrates claims that any man would do the same. The main thought was that; if one doesn't have to fear the consequences of their actions, they would not be moral. And that people only do things to uphold their social status and opinions others have of them. If you can get away with it, you'd do it! It's a rather dark interpretation of human nature. My story opposes this claim!

My story is like a fable, or a fairy tale, and as such it would be explained in a storybook like fashion, with narration (I usually don't like narrated stories, but feel it's fitting here and would speed up the storytelling process). It's set in an almost fantasy setting, like the middle ages but with a fairy tale twist. The main character is a large-chested lumberjack, your typical everyday man, with a wife and children. He sets off on his way, like usual, towards the woods. The backgrounds are important here, I would have everything dynamic, rustling trees and wind. He eventually comes across a shrine or a temple of sorts. A magical looking place. He investigates inside, and eventually finds a magical device, maybe a stopwatch or something alien looking. It gives off a golden glow that glances off his face as he looks at it, amazed. Upon using the device, he realises that it has the power to stop time. This is where it cuts back to the scenes of nature, still now, birds mid-flap, and the trees no longer rustling. After the imagery of the trees it goes back to our lumberjack, different now, the glow of the stopwatch has changed to a red glow, and the lumberjacks face is contorted and an evil sneer passes across it. His eyes glint, and violent imagery starts to appear before his eyes - escalating from bad to worse. Things like stealing his neighbours prized pumpkin, or peeking at his friend's wife when she's changing, eventually leading to murder or worse! Coming back to the lumberjack, we see his expression change as he tries to overcome his internal struggle. Eventually he snaps out of it, and demolishes the device with the flat of his axe.

SPOOF ENDING - He leaves and realises he forgot to un-stop time! Starting a new quest to find another device....... but that's a story for another day!

The Beginning

TESTING TESTING... So the second semester is beginning now, and I'm aiming to stay on top of things from the beginning! I'll soon write about my ideas for the new units.
